Shades Of Fear

Shades Of Fear

{Understanding the language of the bible}

For most of us, the word fear is an unpleasant word and relates to an unpleasant emotion. Some of the words that are used in the bible do not sit well with people such as sin or fear and that's fine. But we must not allow those intimidating words to keep us from the overall message.

So, today I am hoping to shed some light on the word fear.

If the bible talks a lot about not being afraid, then why does God tell us to fear Him?

In our life we experience unhealthy stress, which can deteriorate our bodies, and then healthy stress. It's healthy for us to experience a little good stress. It keeps us motivated to provide food for our family and a roof over our heads. Without the healthy stress that life gives us, we would become lazy and unproductive. Life gives us that nudge.

It is the same with fear. There is unhealthy fear and there is healthy fear.

Do not be afraid

When the Lord is telling us to not be afraid and to not fear, He is telling us not to allow something to make us so afraid that it holds us back. He tells us not to fear, because He is with us. We do not need to be afraid of how our lives will turn out, because he has already mapped it out and His plans are good.

What It Means

The fear of the Lord is described as discipline or instruction of wisdom. God sent the spirit of His son into our hearts which calls out "Abba Father".

"Because you are now part of God’s family, He sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts; and the Spirit calls out, “Abba, Father.” Galatians 4:5 (VOICE)

Saying "Abba Father"expresses great intimacy and respect. So in our hearts, fearing the Lord simply means having such a deep love and respect for our Heavenly Father, that we long to do right by Him.

Now in life, consequences naturally occur when we do not do the right thing or behave in the right way. Examples would be, stealing puts us in jail and lying results in people not trusting us etc.

So fearing the Lord also means, fearing those consequences if we do not align our lives with the spirit who can bring order to our lives (Galatians 5:16). God does all things for our good, but we were given free will and he can not save us from our selves if we are not willing. He may let us sit in those consequences because like any good parent, He wants us to learn. He is faithful and wants us to turn to him in those times as we allow him to bring us through.

Not fearing the Lord means learning the hard way.

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in loveGalatians 5:13

What It Doesn't Mean

Fearing the Lord does not mean feeling guilty for not spending our morning with Him. Guilt and those condemning feelings are not from our faithful father (Romans 8:1).

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27

You see, God did not give us a cowardly spirit but a powerful, loving, and disciplined spirit.                2 Timothy 1:7

So, if we ever feel anything that makes us cowered back or question our identity we now have in Christ, know that it is not from God and that is not the healthy fear.

Shades Of Fear

The fear of the lord is strong confidence: Proverbs 14:26

Foundation of life

The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death. Proverbs 14:27

And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. Luke 1:50

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise. Psalms 111:10

By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the Lord men depart from evil. Proverbs 16:6

Final thoughts

Fearing the Lord helps us to walk in step with the spirit. It allows us to suffer for doing good even when it seems so unfair. It allows us to be confident in Him which will bring us peace & joy even in the midst of hardships and confusion.

What I pray is that we do not allow our fear, of the word fear, to keep us from the love, the life, the instruction, and the wisdom that the bible offers.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,so that the servant of Godmay be thoroughly equipped for every good work.                2 Timothy 3:16

Are you still iffy about the bible? How can I help?
